Lionel Richie - Truly: The Love Songs (1997)

Since it contains seven tunes that Richie wrote and performed as lead singer of the Commodores, the title for this collection may be technically a little misleading. That said, those who appreciate Richie's instantly recognizable vocal style are unlikely to complain about the inclusion of such pop standards as "Three Times a Lady," "Still," and "Easy."

Maybe it's the passage of time, but Richie's solo work sounds more emotionally satisfying than the hits he had with the group: "Hello" is still eminently soulful and "Penny Lover" has a warm and cozy feel. "Endless Love," Richie's memorable duet with Diana Ross, shows that both singers can truly deliver powerhouse vocal performances, while the oft-overlooked Commodores hit "Sweet Love" is a welcome addition to this collection.

Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd is a compilation album by Pink Floyd. The compilation spans the career of Pink Floyd from their first single "Arnold Layne" in 1967, through to "High Hopes", the final track from their 1994 studio album The Division Bell. Four of their albums—Soundtrack from the Film More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, and Obscured by Clouds- are not represented whatsoever, though multiple tracks from Atom Heart Mother and Ummagumma were planned to appear on the compilation.

Each of the twenty-six tracks fades from one to the next with no break in the music, courtesy of longtime producer–engineer James Guthrie to help recreate the concept album feel of the band's mid-period work. All twenty-six tracks were newly remastered specifically for this compilation and are not sequenced in chronological order.

Smash Hits is the first compilation album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It was first released in the UK in 1968, only four months after the band's second studio album, Axis: Bold as Love, and while they were working on their third. Containing their first four (hit) UK singles (and their respective B-sides) in addition to four standout tracks from their (hit) LP Are You Experienced, Smash Hits became exactly that - a #5 album in the UK and one that had a long chart life. It also marked the first appearance on album of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp", five months ahead of its placement on Electric Ladyland.

Early in his career, Billy Joel seemed cynical about fame, even as that distrust bore strange fruit: mainstream superstardom (thanks to "Just the Way You Are," "Honesty," and "My Life") and multiple Grammy awards, as well as the critic's-whipping-boy status that went with them.

Maybe it was that restlessness--or undiluted cynicism--that inspired left turns into roots and nostalgia (the spunky "It's Still Rock & Roll to Me," "You May Be Right," "Uptown Girl," and "The Longest Time") as his career peaked.

Perhaps not surprisingly, not long after Joel's songs seemed to find their most satisfying balance of angst and mature reflection on songs like "Storm Front" and "River of Dreams," he threatened to bolt the pop music business altogether. The 2001 recordings of "Waltz No. 1" and "Invention in C Minor" that round out this set are the unlikely products of Joel's commitment to classical music.

rearviewmirror: Greatest Hits 1991-2003 is a two-disc compilation album by Pearl Jam. The album does an expert job not only of capturing the moment when Pearl Jam were monstrously popular, but proving that they still turned out good music even when they were fading from the spotlight. Unlike most career-spanning, multi-disc retrospectives, rearviewmirror does not emphasize latter-day albums in order to achieve a sense of balance that's inherently phony.

The tracks "Once", "Alive," and "Black" have been remixed by Brendan O'Brien. The album features the same alternate mix of the track "State of Love and Trust" that is actually featured briefly in the movie Singles, but differs from the soundtrack version. The album also includes non-album versions of many other tracks.

It was during this period of their career that the band became a major commercial force in the music industry. Therefore this compilation includes the majority of hit singles released since their breakthrough cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground.

Higher Ground itself, from 1989's Mother's Milk, is included on this compilation for contractual reasons. When the Red Hot Chili Peppers switched from EMI America to Warner Music, each record company agreed that one song from the contract was allowed to be included on the other company's catalogue.
